Emma lost her first tooth!

Emma lost her first tooth on Lindsay and Nathan's birthday (Aug. 4th)! She was so funny about the whole process. As soon as the tooth started feeling loose she wiggled it like crazy and spent all her time for about 3 days wiggling away, but then when she finally has it hanging by a thread she starts to get scared it will hurt when it falls out, so she spent the next 2 days trying not to touch it or bump it or eat on it. Finally it was so loose she kept having to push it back into her mouth (it was just hanging out), and one of the times she went to push it back in, it just fell out! YEAH!!!

Here she is holding the precious tooth!!

Now she has a very difficult problem. She REALLY wants to keep her tooth, but we told her the tooth fairy won't give her a dollar unless she gives her the tooth (I want to keep it with all her memory stuff), and she REALLY wants that dollar. So, for now, she has decided to keep the tooth until she has another one fall out, then she can sell this one to the tooth fairy!

Birthday Cake . . . again!

So, after my previous post, I have to show the final product. Here is Lindsay and Nathan's birthday cake. Since it was for both kids, I decided to make it really big! Then as I got going on it I realized it was a HUGE project! I used two cake mixes and made two 11X14" cakes and stuck them together on a huge piece of cardboard covered with tinfoil. Then, I frosted them with the blue and green background frosting. After that I traced this picture (off our 32" TV) of Dora, Boots, and Backpack onto wax paper with a permanent marker.

Then I traced the wax paper picture with white frosting and turned it over onto the cake, pressed down gently, and then removed the wax paper. It was supposed to trasfer the tracing onto the cake . . . it kind of did, but it took me so long to trace the whole picture that about half of the frosting was dried before I could turn it over, and the dried frosting refused to come off of the wax paper. So, then I re-traced/outlined in free-hand the whole design onto the cake again. And then I got to the hard part!

I filled all of the tracing in with stars in the appropriate colors and finished the cake of with blue and green shells along the bottom. It was a TON of work and took me at least a few hours (probably more) to finish. But it was the design that Lindsay and Nathan really wanted (they were adamant that it have Dora, backpack, AND Boots! And I have to say, I was pretty psyched about the finished product. By far the biggest cake project I've tackled, and of course it was all worthwhile because . . . Lindsay and Nathan LOVED it!

Here I am filling in the traced outline.

And here is the finished cake!

And here are some pictures from the actual birthday party . . . it was Dora the Explorer themed.

Gathering up the goodies after breaking our hand-made piniata!! I forgot to get a picture of the piniata before it got smashed to smithereens, but it turned out pretty cute and we had tons of fun making it!!

Opening the birthday presents!

Pictures with the whole Coleman Family

We went down to Fresno at the end of July to spend some time with the Coleman side of the family. Jerry had a ThomCo meeting he had to go to on Friday morning, so we all tagged along and spent a few days swimming and playing at Grandma and Grandpa's house. I, of course, completely forgot to take any pictures, but Saturday morning we had a photo shoot with the whole Coleman family and ended up with some really cute pictures!

Jim and Carol, their four children and all their families!

Grandma and Grandpa with all their grandkids!

Our five munchkins!!
This is the best group pic we've gotten of the kids so far . . . it's unbelievably hard to get them all to sit still for more than two seconds and even harder to get them all to look at the camera at the same time.

A cute picture of Noah!
He was the only one of the kids I didn't have a recent picture of . . . they grow/change so fast at his age!!

Birthday Cake Anyone?

Okay . . . true confessions??? I LOVE birthday parties! Not the actual party which tends to be a lot like babysitting a visiting troupe of monkeys. I love the buildup and the prep work and the excitement. It gives me a much-needed vent for my creative juices! I love all the little details like matching tablecloths and plates and napkins and party hats and decorating the house. I love coming up with outrageously difficult cakes and spending inordinate amounts of time making them turn out better than I could have imagined (sometimes better than others, but always a pleasant surprise)! I like coming up with games that match the theme and that I know my kids will be excited to play. I love planning menus that don’t include a single green vegetable but are filled with my kids’ favorite foods. I love spending hours making a piƱata that they will break in a few minutes. I love the excuse to give in to my children’s every whim and buy them at least some of the things they’ve been asking for for months. I love wrapping the presents up with bows days in advance and giving silly hints about what they might be. I never get tired of singing happy birthday or watching them blow out their candles. I love their enthusiasm—I love my enthusiasm.
I know, I REALLY need a hobby. But I guess in a life that is mostly filled with chauffeuring and playing referee in inane arguments and cleaning up messes and cooking and tears and tantrums and laundry and poop and slobber—any diversion is welcome! Plus, I get to lick the frosting when I’m finished decorating the cake!!

Wish List

Lindsay and Nathan's birthdays are looming fast, so today we were planning and talking about their party (they are going to combine this year) and what they wanted etc. Then, a few hours later Lindsay comes up to me with this list of things she would like for her birthday. It was so cute and funny I thought I'd share! I typed it the way it was written, but I did take the liberty of translating a few of the wishes.

littlest petshop
Roller skates
scooter
100 red beads
a my little pony Rainbow Dash
julry
a jesuse stachew
lipe stich and capstich (lipstick and chapstick)
a horse that comes in a bag
stamps
a chapter books
sticher earings (sticker earings - she desperately wants to get her ears pierced, but is still a little too scared of the whole piercing process)
perfum

This is one kid who knows just exactly what she wants!

Finally Some Pictures

So, this month I've posted way too many book-length commentary-type blogs, so for a change of pace, here are some pictures of my SUPER ADORABLE munchkins!! Be prepared, it's been a while since I posted pics, so there are TONS!
First some pictures of the whole family on the ward hike to Wiskeytown falls. It is about a 3 mile round trip hike with some pretty grueling uphill climbs, and at the end there is a super steep set of slippery, wet, rock stairs to climb to get an AMAZING view of the falls. We weren't sure we could make it with the whole fam, but we did!! Jerry carried Jeffrey in a backpack and I carried Noah in a front pack, and Lindsay, Emma and Nathan walked the entire way themselves!!
Here we are at the top of the stone steps!! YEAH WE MADE IT!!

And here's the journey!

June 24th through 27th was the annual Kent family reunion!! So much fun. This year we had the first two days at Boyd & Becky Ann's House in Boise and we went to a great park with a splash pad one day and a National park with swimming access the next day. Then, Saturday was the big Preston family Reunion with EVERYONE from my mom's side of the family, then Sunday we spent at Grandma Kent's house! Very busy reunion with lots of driving, but so fun to get to see everyone!! Below is a picture of the entire Kent family, my parents, myself, my four brothers and our families!! (so cool that everyone is in the picture . . . wish it had turned out better).

Here's Dad on the Trampoline--yes, the very same incident which most likely led to him being life-flighted for brain surgery Sunday afternoon. But, he and the grandkids are having a blast together.

Preston Family Reunion . . . here is our family with Great Grandpa Preston!

Nana and the girls

Jerry and Jeffrey

Great Grandma Kent meeting Noah for the first time and then cuddling the girls on the porch swing.

And, last but not least . . . a few days after we got back home from the reunions, Emma had her preschool graduation. It's so hard to believe she's almost in kindergarten! Here she is with her teacher Ms. Jan, the girls in her preschool class, and her preschool diploma!

Such a sweetie!!

An offer of help

It’s 12:15 on Saturday night. I should be sleeping . . . everyone else in my family is. But, there is something delicious about the silence and the peace in my house right now. I don’t want to sleep. I want to savor the quiet, the darkness, the stillness. Three very rare occurrences in our home these days!

The only light in the house is the computer screen (and, of course, the nightlights in the kids rooms) so I can’t even see or feel guilty about the clutter of toys littering my living room floor, and the only sound in the house is the tapping of the computer keys and the soft whirring of the computer. Amazing. Sometimes I think I forget what silence is. No kids yelling or running or crying. No television or radio in the background. Nothing. I didn’t know how much I was needing the silence until I got out of bed tonight and came out to sit in my rocking chair and think for a few minutes.

It’s been a rough couple of days--so if this post is disjointed or rambling or generally unreadable--don't give up on me, maybe the next one will be better!

Jeffrey is teething (his first top tooth-third tooth total) and let’s just say he isn’t one of those easy teethers. Noah is also having some kind of struggle, I keep wondering if he’s getting his first tooth, or maybe he’s had a tummy ache or maybe just overtired. Who knows—certainly not me. He just hasn’t been our normal sunny, sweet-tempered little guy. He has been crying all day today. If he wasn’t sleeping he was fussing or crying.

Tough week overall. But, in the middle of the week something happened. Elder Bednar would call it a “tender mercy.” I went to Relief Society this Thursday. I didn’t want to go. I was exhausted, wasn’t interested in the topic, had too much to do at home blah blah blah blah . . . I ended up going anyway. And after the meeting was over I was standing around talking with a friend and an older sister from my ward came up to me and showed a genuine interest in my life and my family and we talked for a few minutes and then she turned to me and out of the blue she said, “I would be glad to hold your baby for you during church.” I laughed and said that was sweet and kind of brushed her off, but she looked me in the eyes and said, “I really would be glad to help hold him.” And she meant it. She didn’t just say, “Let me know if there is anything I can do to help (I hear that a lot, but that still means I have to come and ask for help). She offered to meet a specific need, and wasn’t asking me for anything in return.

This may sound silly, but her sweet, sincere offer of help made me just want to break down and cry. I have seldom in my life been in such need of help. Having five kids under the age of seven is not easy. It is a lot of fun, and I love my babies and I certainly wouldn’t change them or trade them for anything. But it’s not easy. And I am having so much trouble asking for help. I guess I feel like “I chose this” and now it’s my job to deal with it. Plus, I’m a little afraid that if I ask for help people will think I can’t handle it or that we shouldn’t be choosing to adopt Jeffrey, or that we just have too many kids. I don’t want people to judge me or my family. Especially since we are choosing to adopt in addition to the four we already have. I want everyone to think our family is perfect and that Jeffrey is lucky to be part of it. As opposed to “that crazy lady what’s she think she’s doing . . . she can’t even handle the four she has, and she wants to adopt another one?” I know it shouldn’t matter to me what other people think. I know that what we are doing is right and that we are supposed to make Jeffrey a part of our family, and that should be enough. But it does matter what other people think. So, I try to prove to everyone that we are doing just fine and don’t need help. Which, as a general rule is true. But I have to say, some days a little help would be very nice.

Anyway, after talking with this sister, I just feel like we don’t have to go it alone. Even if it’s just for one hour or even five minutes on a Sunday—there is someone who will help. With Jerry in the Elders Quorum presidency and me in the Primary Presidency and two babies who are not yet in nursery, a helping hand sounds pretty good right about now.
